Profits from “When the Center Held” to Benefit Rising Public Servants of Foundation’s Graduate Fellowship Program
MAY 23, 2018

Washington, D.C. — The Rumsfeld Foundation is pleased to announce that all of Donald Rumsfeld’s profits from his new book, When the Center Held: Gerald Ford and the Rescue of the American Presidency, will be donated to the Foundation’s Graduate Fellowship Program in support of rising U.S. leaders of outstanding intellectual ability, integrity, moral character and leadership potential.

“We began our Foundation just over a decade ago with the mission to honor public service and to encourage talented young people to contribute to our nation. With my new book, I am delighted to be able to highlight the important contributions that President Ford made to our nation as well as to call attention to his example of honorable service and the dignity of service more broadly. I am pleased When the Center Held will be able to benefit future generations of public servants through our Graduate Fellowship Program,” said Rumsfeld.

Available online and in bookstores, When the Center Held details the history of the unexpected presidency of Gerald R. Ford, whose moral courage and character helped to bring a divided nation back to “center." As President Ford’s Chief of Staff, Secretary of Defense and a close personal friend, Rumsfeld reflects on the important lessons to be drawn from Ford’s leadership.

Since 2008, the Foundation has granted more than 150 Fellowships totaling over $2.5 million to 130 exceptional graduate scholars, all with an interest in entering public service or serving in policy-relevant fields. The program provides grants for M.A. and Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students pursuing public service-related internships.
