Dear Friends,

Joyce and I are pleased to fill you in on the progress of our foundation over the past year. Our mission remains the same: to reward public service at home and support the growth of free political and free economic systems abroad. With the publication of my forthcoming memoir, Known and Unknown, scheduled for early next year, my proceeds from the book will be given to the U.S. military and veterans' charities supported by our foundation.

We have launched the foundation's website at www.rumsfeldfoundation.org. We will use the site to provide more frequent updates and to post press releases on the foundation's latest activities. To spare your time and a few trees, we will limit this year's report to the highlights of 2010. For more information, we encourage you to visit our website.

1. U.S. Military and Veterans' Charities

A major focus of the foundation continues to be providing support to some of our nation's most dedicated public servants: U.S. military members, veterans and their families. We continue to work with organizations that provide career counseling and mentor programs, medical support, financial assistance, and scholarships. We have also partnered with organizations such as Spirit of America, which supports projects identified by service members on the ground in places such as Iraq and Afghanistan to help win local support.

2. Graduate Student Fellowships

Since we began the Graduate Fellowship Program in 2008, the foundation has awarded 26 fellowships to promising graduate students with an interest in public service. Based on the recommendations of our superb nominators at twelve graduate institutions throughout the country, the foundation has been able to assist these talented students with tuition and stipend support. For the 2010-2011 academic year, the Trustees awarded a total of 15 fellowships. I have had the pleasure of meeting with a number of these students and am continually impressed not only by their desire to contribute through public service but by their intellectual caliber.

3. Microfinance

In August, we announced our 2010 microfinance grants totaling $225,000 to four organizations including Opportunity International, Grameen Foundation, ACCION International and FINCA International. These grants will support microfinance efforts in thirteen countries from Central and South America to Central Asia.

4. U.S.- Central Asia Relations

We are extremely pleased with the growth of our Fellowship Program for young leaders from Central Asia, the Caucasus and Afghanistan and the leadership of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. To date, we have brought 34 impressive fellows from nine countries of the region to the United States. The fellows have met with some of our country's finest leaders in government, business, journalism and academia.

This fall, the group of eight new fellows met with such notable figures as Dr. Alan Greenspan, Steve Hadley, Admiral Jim Stavridis, General James "Hoss" Cartwright, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Justice Antonin Scalia, and José María Aznar, the former Prime Minister of Spain. They also traveled to Boston for a glimpse of America beyond our nation's capital.

After hosting five groups of Central Asian fellows, we are delighted to see the growth of the program and are optimistic that over time it may have a lasting impact on U.S.- Central Asia relations.

Some have expressed interest in making a charitable contribution to the foundation. It is possible to donate through the website at https://www.rumsfeldfoundation.org/contribute/.

If you have questions or suggestions, please visit our new website at www.rumsfeldfoundation.org. As always, Joyce and I appreciate your interest.

Warm regards,

Don and Joyce Rumsfeld
