May 26, 2016

Washington, D.C. – On Saturday, May 21st the Rumsfeld Foundation hosted a Spring Gathering for Fellows and Advisers of its Graduate Fellowship Program in St. Michaels, Maryland. Over the course of the day, a number of activities were held to facilitate networking and discussion.

The gathering commenced with a lunch hosted at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, during which guests had a chance to visit with one another. After lunch, Don Rumsfeld, President of the Foundation, spoke to the group on his time in public service and answered questions on leadership, decision-making and current events. Following the session with Rumsfeld, there was an informative panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Steve Cambone, a member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, which featured four of the Program’s distinguished Advisers who provided their insights on “Navigating Paths of Public Service and Academia,” as well as responded to questions.

Commenting on the value of the Fellowship Program’s growing network, a Fellow in attendance who received support while at the University of Chicago noted, “By bringing together an array of conceptual and practical expertise that spans the academic disciplines and policy areas, this network facilitates cross-pollination, collaboration and information sharing.”

The events concluded with a reception and dinner at the Miles River Yacht Club with views overlooking the waterfront. During dinner, Dr. J.D. Crouch, President and CEO of the USO, provided remarks on the importance of leadership and service among our nation's newest generations.

Don Rumsfeld remarked, "It was an enjoyable and productive day, and we look forward to providing more opportunities in the future for the bright young leaders of our growing Graduate Fellowship network and their Advisers to connect."

Since 2008, the Foundation has provided more than 120 Fellowships totaling over $1.9 million to 98 graduate scholars, all with an interest in entering public service or serving in policy-relevant fields.
